CPD and training

International Model of Creative Ability Conference/CPD Event: 21 May 2010

The first conference was held on 29 May 2009 and was an overwhelming success. Feedback included:
“a brilliant, exciting day – I have come away inspired and full of ideas to take back to practice”
“thank you for such an informative, interesting and inspiring day – the most useful conference I have been to in a long, long time”

The second conference will be held at Hamilton House near Euston Station on 21 May 2010. To assist potential delegates to gain funding for attendance, the conference has been referred to as a CPD Event in the provisional programme and on the registration form.

Training in the Model of Creative Ability

Occupational Therapy models of practice are complex and to implement the model effectively requires formal education/training. Expert occupational therapists and educators are clear that training is a necessary requirement. This is particularly important for those professionals working outside of South Africa and who have not received extensive training as part of undergraduate education.

As an International Creative Ability Network, ICAN is the foremost UK provider of training, support and consultancy for developing the application of the Model of Creative Ability in occupational therapy and multidisciplinary practice in the UK and abroad.

Inspired by the Model of Creative Ability which enables occupational therapists to be occupational therapists, enabling clients to experience success through participation in occupation, the words ‘I can’ relates the model well to therapists and clients alike.

ICAN has strong relationships with an international network of MCA educators, researchers and clinicians and collaborates with occupational therapists, drama therapists, therapeutic drummers and other professionals in order to meet professionals’ continuing development needs for growing knowledge and skills for Model of Creative Ability practice.

Spare places on training

Head/Lead OTs that organise training for their staff/teams, often have spare places for OTs and support workers outside of their Trust. Notification of these training events and spare places is made via the members’ area and an e-mail distribution list. If you would like to be included on the e-mail list contact wendy@ican-uk.com

Continuing Professional Development

Undergraduate and post graduate education

The model is taught on the BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy programmes at London South Bank University. Post graduate Masters level modules on the model are also provided by South Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust. For information contact annie.heining@southessex-trust.nhs.uk
