We hope that you find this site a useful resource on the Vona du Toit Model of Creative Ability (VdT MoCA) as presented by de Witt P (2005) Creative Ability - a Model for Psychiatric Occupational Therapy IN R Crouch, V Alers (2005) Occupational Therapy in Psychiatry and Mental Health. John Wiley & Sons.

The VdT Model of Creative Ability is gaining increasing interest and favour amongst occupational therapists in Great Britain and other countries, particularly in the fields of mental health, forensic, learning disabilities and head injuries.

The Model of Creative Ability Interest Group (MCAIG) was founded in 2006 by Wendy Sherwood MSc, an occupational therapist and Senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy. The concept of MCAIG arose out of realising that literature on, and access to this South African model is limited. After undertaking an MSc study on the model's assessment, Wendy was awarded the Agnes Storar Travel Bursary with which she visited OTs using the model in South Africa. On her return, Wendy created the MCAIG website for sharing knowledge and experience of using the model and for bringing together a community of practice. In 2012, MCAIG became the operational arm of the Vona du Toit Model of Creative Ability Foundation (UK).

Aims of MCAIG:

  • To bring together isolated or groups of occupational therapists, OT support workers, educators and other interested parties into a community of practice (a network) for the purpose of sharing knowledge, skills and experience related to the VdT Model of Creative Ability
  • To disseminate information relating to the VdT Model of Creative Ability in order to widen access to information for the occupational therapy profession globally
  • To stimulate critical evaluation of the model
  • To support the development of research ideas, implementation and dissemination
  • To support international collaboration

The information pages are freely accessible. There are special downloads available to those with membership at just £12 per annum, including copies of conference posters and presentations, shared information on assessment and intervention, report writing, care plans plus MCAIG's own publication 'Participation', which provides essential up-dates on the development of the model internationally and 'must-have' feature articles. MCAIG members can also apply or be nominated for annual MCAIG awards and bursaries (not available to non-members).

This site provides information that supplements de Witt (2005) which is the contemporary reference chapter for the model. However, please note that since this chapter was published, the model was renamed the Vona du Toit Model of Creative Ability (VdT MoCA) in 2010.The VdT MoCA Foundation (UK) holds a national database of published and unpublished literature and presentations, a list of which is available to MCAIG members.

What is the VdT Model of Creative Ability?

what is mcaig

The VdT Model of Creative Ability is an OT practice model of contemporary relevance.  It is a recovery model that enables therapists to facilitate the recovery of motivation and occupational performance.  Unique to this model is its provision of a detailed guide to the selection and presentation of intervention in the form of activity as a powerful therapeutic tool.
