about this site

This site provides information on the Model of Creative Ability as presented by de Witt (2005) and is the home of
MCA IG in Partnership with South Essex Partnership University Foundation NHS Trust and the BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy programme team at the University of Kwa Zulu-Natal, South Africa.

The Model of Creative Ability is gaining increasing interest and favour amongst occupational therapists in Great Britain, particularly in the fields of mental health, forensic, learning disabilities and head injuries. Forensic services in Japan have also adopted the model and there is growing interest in other fields.

MCAIG was founded in 2006 by Wendy Sherwood MSc, an occupational therapist and Senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy. The concept of MCAIG arose out of realising that literature on, and access to this South African model is very limited. Wendy undertook a Masters dissertation on the model’s assessment. South African occupational therapists as participants in the study discussed how they have developed the use of the model and it became apparent that this knowledge and theory building is not shared widely with the occupational therapy profession.

On receipt of the Agnes Storar Travel Bursary, Wendy visited OTs using the model in South Africa and on her return, decided to create the MCAIG website as a tool for sharing knowledge and experience of using the model and for bringing together a community of practice.

Aims of MCAIG:

  • To bring together isolated or groups of occupational therapists, OT support workers, educators and other interested parties into a community of practice (a network) for the purpose of sharing knowledge, skills and experience related to the Model of Creative Ability
  • To disseminate information relating to the Model of Creative Ability in order to widen access to information for the occupational therapy profession globally
  • To stimulate critical evaluation of the model
  • To develop continuing professional development opportunities
  • To support the development of research ideas, implementation and dissemination
  • To support international collaboration

What is the Model of Creative Ability?

what is mcaig

The Model of Creative Ability is an OT practice model of contemporary relevance.  It is a recovery model that enables therapists to facilitate the recovery of motivation and occupational performance.  Unique to this model is its provision of a detailed guide to the selection and presentation of intervention in the form of activity as a powerful therapeutic tool.

The Model of Creative Ability
Assessment and Intervention

The Model of Creative provides a number of methods for performing assessment, making it very flexible for therapists. Comprehensive treatment/intervention guidelines are provided for selection and use of activity. The focus on activity, activity analysis and grading assists OTs to provide OT to all clients.

The Model of Creative Ability in

The detailed levels of creative ability are easy to align with service provision. This enables OTs to ‘expect’ clients of particular levels of ability within their service, enabling them to efficiently organise and provide assessment and intervention.

Awards and Grants

Vona du Toit strongly asserted that the occupational therapy profession should be established with scientific and theoretical foundations, offering a means of measuring and demonstrating its effectiveness. There is a need for qualified and unqualified occupational therapists with the initiative to explore, discuss, research and report on the model in practice in order to broaden knowledge of creative ability and to provide an evidence-base for this important model.

MCAIG provides three initiatives to support this endeavour:
MCAIG Award for occupational therapy support workers
MCAIG-Sherwood Travel Bursary
MCAIG-Sherwood Grant for Research
